How to Make Mpiru Otendera: Malawian Recipes

Learn how to make this favorite Malawian dish, Mpiru Otendera. One of Malawi’s most popular recipes, Mpiru Otendera (mustard greens with peanut flour) is a nutritious and filling recipe that goes well with many meals.

Ingredients

  • Mpiru (mustard greens),
  • Nsinjiro (groundnut/peanut flour)
  • Tomatoes
  • Anyezi (onions)*
  • Mchere (salt)
  • Madzi (water)

How to Make Mpiru Otendera: A popular Malawian dish

Cut mustard greens into small pieces.

Step 1: Clean the greens, tomatoes and onions then cut them into small pieces.

Vegetables are all sliced and ready to add.

Step 2: Put a pot of water (one cup) on fire and let the water boil.

Step 3: Add salt to taste then add the greens.

Add greens to boiling water.

Step 4: Cover the vegetables with a lid and let them cook for 3-5 minutes, then turn them.

Step 5: Add tomatoes, onions and groundnut flour to the greens. Cover them with a lid and let them boil for 5 minutes. 

Add peanut flour to pot.

Step 6: Stir everything together, making sure it mixes well. If it tends to be too thick, at this point, you can add extra water.

Step 7: Let it simmer on low heat for another 5 minutes.

Mpiru otendera is ready to serve.

Mpiru Ootendera is usually served with Nsima. However others serve it with rice or any other starch of their choice. Today, we are serving Mpiru Otendera with Nsima and Mbewa (mice). Mice are common in Malawi during this season and they are rich in protein yet cheap.
