Today we will teach you how to make futali, one of Malawi’s traditional foods. This is a dish of sweet potatoes and peanut flour that makes a filling and nutritious meal at breakfast or anytime of day.
Futali is made from sweet potatoes, groundnut (peanut) flour, water, and salt. It is a savory dish that goes well with tea or coffee.
Step 1: Peel sweet potatoes and cut them into 1-inch cubes.
Step 2: Put the sweet potato cubes in a pot. Add 500 mls (2 cups) of water and salt to taste.
Step 3: Cover the pot with a lid and let the potatoes boil for 15 minutes over medium-high heat.
Step 4: At 15 minute mark, add groundnut flour and cover the pot.
Step 5: Leave the potatoes and the groundnut flour to cook for another 15 minutes.
Step 6: Stir the potatoes, making sure that they mix well with the groundnut flour. If it tends to be too thick, at this point, you can add extra water.
Step 7: Reduce the heat and let it cook for another 15 minutes
Step 8: Futali is ready to serve.
Futali can be served at any time of the day, and is commonly served for breakfast. It can be served with a cup of tea or coffee. We hope you enjoy this delicious recipe from Malawi!
