Greening Malawi, One Nursery at a Time

Why Tree Nurseries?

Deforestation remains one of Malawi’s most pressing environmental challenges. In most rural communities, firewood is the primary source of fuel for cooking, and many other daily activities involve cutting down trees.

While our Nkhuni Pang’ono, Moto! Firewood-saving stoves have already helped reduce the rate of deforestation in villages surrounding Group Village Head M’biya, we knew we had to go further by replanting the trees that have been lost over the years. Trees play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and by investing in local nurseries, we are hoping to build a sustainable, community-led, and climate-smart solution for reforestation.

Each nursery has the potential to grow up to 2,000 Bluegum tree seedlings that will one day take root in villages, schools, and communal lands, bringing lasting environmental and economic benefits.

The Process

The process begins by identifying willing community members and groups to manage the nurseries. We then provide training, seeds, tools, and technical support. Together, we raise a fence, prepare nursery beds, and plant seedlings that will later be transplanted to reforestation sites.  Individual participants will plant trees on their personal land and community groups will be supported by village leaders in securing communal land for planting.

Energy and Environment program manager, Lester Mwalwenje (second from left), stands with some of the village people who have been participating in the tree planting initiative.

A Small Investment, A Big Impact

It costs just MK150,000 (approximately $86 USD) to establish one nursery. This covers materials, training, and operational support to grow 2,000 tree seedlings. It may seem like a small amount, but the impact is big. Each tree will help cool the planet, improve soil health, and protect Malawi’s natural heritage for future generations. Beyond environmental restoration, this work will build local ownership, capacity and economic empowerment. Communities will take pride in watching their seed from nurseries grow, knowing they are actively shaping a healthier and more resilient future.

What’s Next?

This is just the beginning. Once the rainy season begins, we will begin planting the seedlings to the reafforestation sites. And we will not stop there! We are looking forward to expanding this initiative to more communities across our catchment area. Our vision is a greener, more climate-resilient Malawi, led by the very communities who call it home.
