A Survivor's Tale: Margret's Journey with Cervical Cancer

At 52, Margret, a resident of Mphamba village in Traditional Authority Chakhaza, Dowa district, has faced her share of challenges. But nothing could have prepared her for the shock of being diagnosed with cervical cancer

Margret shares her experience of regularly undergoing cervical cancer screenings, which equipped her with knowledge about the dangers, signs, and symptoms of the disease. Although Margret had heard about cervical cancer, the information seemed irrelevant until 2022.

Having hit menopause in 2014, one day in June 2022, Margret was alarmed when she noticed bleeding while taking a bath. She immediately recalled that bleeding is a sign of cervical cancer and decided to visit the hospital. At Kasese Health Centre, Margret underwent cervical cancer screening and was referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital for further evaluation. The diagnosis confirmed her worst fears: she had cervical cancer.

Margret admits that the news filled her with anxiety, causing her to lose weight. However, she opted for a hysterectomy (surgical operation to remove all or part of the uterus) since she had passed the childbearing stage. She diligently followed the hospital’s instructions, adhered to the prescribed medication, and attended all chemotherapy sessions.

“Throughout my journey, I faced numerous challenges, including hair loss and bodily changes. However, I persevered, fueled by my determination to fight the disease,” says Margret.

Today, Margret is a testament to the power of resilience and early detection. Her hair has grown back, and she has regained her energy, allowing her to care for her family once again.

Margret’s story serves as a beacon of hope for women everywhere. She encourages all women of childbearing age to prioritize cervical cancer screening, emphasizing that early diagnosis is the first step in fighting the disease.

As a guiding light in her community, Margret continues to inspire others, promoting cervical cancer awareness and encouraging women to seek medical attention if diagnosed.

Margret’s story is a powerful reminder that cervical cancer is not a death sentence. With knowledge, early detection, and the right treatment, women can overcome this disease and reclaim their lives.
