Bringing Lifesaving Nutrition to Every Child’s Doorstep
Bringing Lifesaving Nutrition to Every Child’s Doorstep
Tikhale was in the middle of her morning chores when she heard a gentle knock at her door.
Standing outside was a community health worker, smiling warmly and carrying a small supply box. She explained she was visiting homes in the area to provide vitamin A supplementation and deworming treatment for children.
Tikhale called her two-year-old daughter, Vanessa, who shyly peeked from behind her. Within minutes, she had received her vitamin A capsule and Albendazole tablet.
Tikhale felt relieved.
“Without having to travel long distances or leave my responsibilities behind, essential healthcare has reached my doorstep,” she says
That simple knock represented something bigger: care, prevention, and hope.
Reaching Children Where They Are
From 18th February 2026, our healthcare team conducted a joint Vitamin A supplementation and Albendazole deworming campaign targeting 6,000 children aged 6 to 59 months. Implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Health Malawi, Dowa District Health Office, Health Surveillance Assistants, and community leaders, the campaign ensures that essential preventive services reach even the most remote households.
The door-to-door approach plays a critical role in reaching children who might otherwise miss these services due to distance, limited resources, or other barriers. By bringing care directly into communities, we are ensuring equitable access and protecting vulnerable children during their most important years of growth.
Why Vitamin A and Deworming Are Essential
Vitamin A is vital for a child’s immune system, eyesight, and overall development. It helps children resist infections such as measles and diarrhea, reduces the risk of complications, and supports healthy physical and cognitive growth. In countries like Malawi, where Vitamin A deficiency remains a concern, supplementation significantly reduces child mortality.
At the same time, children receive Albendazole to treat and prevent intestinal worm infections. Worm infections can quietly weaken a child’s health by interfering with nutrient absorption, reducing appetite, and contributing to anaemia. Deworming ensures children benefit fully from the food they eat, helping them grow stronger and healthier.
Together, these combined interventions help:
- Improve child growth and development
- Reduce illness and malnutrition
- Strengthen immunity
- Lower household healthcare costs
- Support better school attendance and learning
- Reduce preventable strain on health facilities
These services form a cornerstone of preventive healthcare and align with Malawi’s national child health strategy.
Supporting National and Global Health Goals
These campaigns directly support Malawi’s efforts to reduce under-five mortality, combat malnutrition, and improve child wellbeing. They are part of a broader national effort led by the Ministry of Health Malawi to ensure that every child has access to essential health services.
Globally, the World Health Organization recommends periodic Vitamin A supplementation and deworming in countries where deficiencies and parasitic infections are common. By implementing these interventions, Malawi continues to meet global health standards and advance progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.
We are deeply grateful to our generous donors whose support makes initiatives like this possible.
Thanks to those of you who supported us at Giving Tuesday 2025 – your gifts have made this supplementation campaign possible.
Because of your kindness and commitment, we are able to reach children door-to-door with essential Vitamin A supplementation and deworming services, protecting their health today and strengthening their future.
Thank you for being part of this life-changing work.
