As the backbone of Malawi's economy, agriculture accounts for approximately 30% of the country's Gross Domestic Product. It is the primary source of livelihood for many rural Malawians, who solely rely on farming to make ends meet. However, the journey to a successful harvest is never easy for these rural farmers, who face numerous challenges that threaten their livelihoods. Selection Of Ulemu Scholarship Students For The 2024/2025 Academic Year
In the third phase of Ulemu scholarship selection for the 2024/2025 academic year, the OCA education program received 49 applications. From the applications, 25 applications were shortlisted for verification, thus if they do not have other scholarships/university loans and also if they are needy students. From the 25 shortlisted applications, 10 applications were successful. This means that a total of 10 students have been selected for the scholarship.
Selected Students
- Two OCA previous sponsored students have been considered to be given the scholarship. One comes from within the Kasese catchment area from Bweya village, she was supposed to start school in August, 2024 but she did not go due to lack of school fees, rather she reserved a place for next year. The other student comes from Ntchisi district and is going to school in November, 2024. They are all in their first year.
- Four other first year students have also been selected for the scholarship. One from Madisi trading centre, and another from Mponela, He started his first year in August at the Lilongwe University of Natural Resources but did not finish the semester due to lack of school fees, he reserved a place for next year. The other one is from Kasungu and in his first year, he has only paid part of school fees (MWK 200,000 out of MWK 499,500) after her mother borrowed from well wishers. He does not know where to get the remaining payment. The last student is also from Kasungu and has not yet gone to school due to lack of school fees, his friends have started school in February, 2024 and he reserved a place to start in January, 2025.
- From the total selected students for Orant Ulemu Scholarship, there are also Four continuing students (4). Three students are in 2nd year , and one student in 3rd year. For the 3 students in 2nd year; one student in her first year was being paid by her friends at school after the school raised funds for her, the other student has not paid even school fees for her first year and she is nearer dropping out and the last one has also not paid any amount for his second year. The student in 3rd year is also in school but has not paid tuition for his 3rd year.
Note:
- From the 10 selected students, Two students are studying for a diploma program (three years course) and 8 students are studying for Degree programs (four years course).
- Five students are girls and five students are boys
- Four students are from Dowa district, three students are from Kasungu district, two students are from Lilongwe district and one student from Ntchisi district.
- The students are going to 5 different schools. Two schools in Lilongwe (LUANAR & KUHES), One school in Zomba (UNIMA), one school in Blantyre (MUBAS), and another school in Mzuzu (MZUNI).
