Malawi Farming Challenges and Solutions (Part 1)

Malawi Farming Challenges and Solutions (Part 1)
Farming remains the backbone of Malawi’s economy and the main source of livelihood for thousands of rural families. For most households, farming is not just a source of income, but also the primary way to put food on the table. Yet, every farming season comes with its own challenges that directly affect crop yields, food security, and household incomes. These problems rarely end with one season. Instead, their effects often go into the next, trapping families in a difficult cycle of low productivity and financial struggle year after year.
Rural Farmers’ challenges
The 2024/2025 farming season was one with its own challenges. Many farmers faced serious challenges due to uncertain weather patterns that made farming highly unpredictable. In some areas, long dry spells caused crops to wilt, while in others, heavy rainfall and flooding destroyed fields. These extremes disrupted planting cycles and made it difficult for crops to mature properly.
At the same time, rising input costs created more barriers. Prices of fertilizer, high-quality seeds, and basic farming equipment increased beyond the reach of many smallholder farmers. Without the right inputs, even the most hardworking farmer struggles to achieve a good harvest. This was further challenging due to outbreaks of pests and diseases. Maize, Malawi’s staple food crop, was attacked by armyworms and other pests, leaving many fields damaged. Families who depend almost entirely on maize for food and income were left in an even more vulnerable position.
These setbacks from the past season are already spilling over into the upcoming 2025/2026 farming season. Many households depleted their grain reserves much earlier than expected and are now being forced to buy food at higher prices. With this, farmers already have less or no money to invest in seeds, fertilizer, or other necessary inputs. This puts them at risk of producing even less in the coming season, repeating the cycle of hardship.
At Orant Charities Africa, we remain committed to standing alongside rural farmers during these uncertain times. We believe that with preparation, innovation, and strong community support, farmers can face the challenges ahead with resilience. But how can farmers prepare for this season and remain resilient? Be on the lookout for our next blog, where we will share practical solutions and strategies to help farmers thrive despite the challenges.
