Lighting the Future in Rural Malawi

Many schools in rural Malawi continue to operate without reliable electricity, as ESCOM power has not yet reached some areas. This limits learning opportunities, affects teacher retention, and makes it difficult for students to study in the early mornings and evenings. Lack of power also reduces access to digital learning tools, safe lighting, and basic school administration. Due to poverty, many families cannot afford torches or candles, and even when they can, these light sources are often unreliable and unhealthy for children’s eyes.

To respond to this need, we have  launched Sukulu Ziwale, meaning “Schools Must Be Lit.” Through this initiative, our Energy and Environment Program, in collaboration with our Education Program, is installing solar energy systems in Five off-grid primary and Community Day Secondary Schools across our catchment area.

These solar systems will provide clean, reliable, and sustainable electricity, resulting in:

  • Bright, well-lit classrooms for better learning
  • Power for computers and digital learning tools
  • Improved safety and security on school premises
  • Extended study hours for students
  • Better working conditions for teachers

A Holistic Approach to Community Development

This project reflects our holistic programming model. Our Energy and Environment Program works closely with our Education, Business Development, Agriculture, Healthcare, and other Development programs to address challenges from multiple angles. When a school is powered, the entire community benefits, as schools become hubs for meetings, youth programs, and information sharing.

By choosing solar energy, we are also promoting climate-smart solutions that reduce reliance on expensive and polluting fuels, helping schools and communities save money while reducing their environmental impact. The project also raises awareness about renewable energy, environmental stewardship, and sustainability.

This initiative is about more than just installing solar systems, it is about lighting up futures. It is about giving students better learning conditions, empowering teachers, and strengthening communities through sustainable, long-term solutions.

We are deeply grateful to our generous donors, whose support is helping ensure that no school  and no child  is left in the dark. Stay tuned as we share the exciting successes and impact stories from this initiative.
