Introducing Our New Energy and Environment Program
Climate change is a harsh reality that cannot be ignored. The devastating impact of deforestation in Ngara mountain, near our campus, and the pollution of Bua river, which is adjacent to us, have been eye-opening experiences. These challenges have prompted us to launch the Energy and Environment Program to address the effects of climate change and promote sustainable development.
The goal of this program is to mitigate the effects of climate change, advocate for environmental protection, and ensure proper waste management. We also aim to increase access to affordable solar energy and educate the community about alternative energy sources.
Is energy part of the approach to climate change?
Yes, energy plays a critical role in addressing climate change. Renewable energy sources, such as solar power, are essential in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. By promoting the use of solar energy, we can mitigate the effects of climate change and create a more sustainable future.
What do we want to do in 2025 and over the long stretch?
In 2025, we plan to increase access to solar energy for our campus and surrounding communities. We will also educate the community about alternative energy sources and promote permaculture practices. In the long run, we aim to develop innovative solutions to address climate change, conduct research to identify local solutions, and partner with other organizations in the Energy and Environment sector.
Do we have someone who will be running this program?
Yes, we have recruited an experienced professional to lead our Energy and Environment Program. They will start working in January 2025.
Why is solar power important in general and to Malawi?
Solar power is a clean, renewable, and affordable source of energy. It can be replenished naturally and is available everywhere the sun shines. In Malawi, where access to electricity is limited, solar power can provide a reliable and sustainable solution. By promoting the use of solar energy, we can reduce deforestation, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.
How is hydropower and bio-energy produced in Malawi? Are they sustainable?
Bio-energy is not a sustainable solution due to its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. Hydropower, on the other hand, is a significant source of energy in Malawi. However, it faces challenges due to climate change, which has led to increased frequency of cyclones and fluctuating water levels.
Are there any alternative forms of energy that we can explore?
Yes, we plan to promote the use of bio-gas, briquettes, and wind energy, which have not been fully explored in Malawi.
Why is Energy and Environment part of Orant's holistic approach to programming in Malawi?
Energy and Environment are critical components of Orant’s holistic approach to programming in Malawi. We recognize that environmental sustainability is essential for achieving our development goals. As we work towards achieving the MW2063 vision, we must ensure that our programs are environmentally sustainable and promote the well-being of both people and the planet.
How will this program collaborate with Orant's other programs?
Our Energy and Environment Program will collaborate with other Orant programs, including WASH, Healthcare and Agriculture. We will conduct environmental impact assessments for all our projects and provide advisory services to ensure that our programs are environmentally sustainable.
We’re excited to share this new program with you, and we invite you to join us on this journey. Your support is crucial to the success of our Energy and Environment Program. Donate through the link below to help us empower sustainable development.
