Empowering Local Women: Turning Surplus Crops into Income
Empowering FEM Women: Turning Surplus Crops into Income
In Malawi, small-scale farmers often face a common and costly challenge: when crops such as Tomatoes, Soybeans, and Groundnuts are produced in large quantities, the market cannot always absorb the surplus. As a result, much of the harvest goes to waste, leading to financial losses for farmers and missed opportunities for their communities.
For many female entrepreneurs, the harvest is not just food; it is a livelihood. However, surplus crops often go to waste, and with them, a vital source of income disappears. This is where the training made a real difference. By equipping women with hands-on skills to process, preserve, and add value to their produce, it turned a seasonal challenge into an opportunity for growth.
Imagine tomatoes transformed into rich, flavorful sauces, groundnuts into creamy peanut butter, or soybeans into nutritious milk and protein-packed pieces. These women are now able to extend the shelf life of their crops, reduce food waste, and, most importantly, secure an income throughout the year. Beyond just learning techniques, they are unlocking the full economic potential of their harvests and paving the way for stronger, more resilient families and communities.
“This training is very important for our women entrepreneurs,” said Tango Phiri, our Business Development Manager. “It gives them the tools to turn challenges like oversupply into opportunities, reduce waste, and improve their livelihoods.”
The collaboration with Opulence Malawi also highlights the importance of partnerships in community development. By combining expertise and resources, we can provide practical training that empowers women and supports local economies.
Participants left the training motivated and ready to apply their new knowledge. The skills they gained will help them process surplus crops, produce high-quality products, and expand their small businesses, contributing to food security and economic growth in Malawi.
Orant Charities Africa is committed to uplifting women, reducing food waste, and fostering sustainable development. Through programs like this, we continue to empower communities and help women build stronger, more resilient businesses.
