Malita’s Story of Love and Devotion

As the world comes together to commemorate World Breastfeeding Week, we are reminded of the profound impact that breastfeeding has on the lives of babies and mothers. For Malita Yohane from Mkwichi village, breastfeeding has been more than just a choice. It has been a lifeline for her son Benjamin, who was born prematurely. Born too soon, Benjamin’s tiny body needed the nourishment and protection that only breast milk could provide.

Malita’s dedication to breastfeeding has been unwavering and her story is a testament to the power of love and devotion.

Overcoming Fear and Challenges

“At first I was scared seeing my son’s condition. But the love I have for him  is what gave me determination to see him live. I understood that breastfeeding was crucial for his growth and development, and I was willing to do whatever it took to make it work,” shares Malita.

Malita shares that her journey has not been without challenges. From latching issues to supply concerns, she faced challenges that could have easily discouraged her on her breastfeeding journey. But with the support of the healthcare team, her family and community, she persevered.

“I have been receiving the much needed support from the healthcare team and others around me, always encouraging me to intensively breastfeed my son,” she narrates.

This reminds us all that the breastfeeding journey is not just about the mother. It’s about the entire family and community coming together to support her.

“Breastfeeding is a journey that requires support, patience and dedication,” says Melanie Chimtali, a nurse at our Kasese Health Centre.

Breastfeeding Pays Off

After two weeks of breastfeeding her baby, Malita is happy for the progress she can see in her baby. From 1500 grams (3.3 lbs), she goes home all smiles seeing that her son weighs 1860 grams (4.1 lbs). That’s almost a full pound gained!

“This is so much progress to me, considering where I am coming from with him and I am happy that my breastfeeding journey is paying off,” she says.
