Celebrating Nurses: Unsung Heroes of Healthcare
As we continue celebrating the achievement of being recognised as best nurses in the Central East zone of the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM), we also take time to look back and acknowledge the critical role that nurses play in our healthcare system.
The award is not just an honor; it is a reminder of the amount of trust that our patients and communities have placed in our nurses. It is fuel to our nurses’ motivation and a reminder of the responsibility we have towards patients, families and communities.
Nurses are the backbone of healthcare; providing care, support, and hope to patients, families and communities every day. Their job is not just merely a job. It is a calling, a vocation, a passion being fulfilled, and a privilege. On this day, we recognise the hard work, commitment, compassion and dedication of our nurses, which inspires us everyday.

Celebrating International Nurses Day
As we celebrate, we remember this year’s theme: “Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care,” which demonstrates how strategic investment in nursing can bring considerable economic and societal benefits. With this theme, we recognize the value of nursing, the impact they have in communities, and the critical role they play in shaping the economic future of healthcare.
We also acknowledge that this would not be possible without the support of other teams. For this, we say thank you to the whole healthcare team for consistently demonstrating a passion for your work, for going above and beyond to ensure that patients receive the best possible care and for striving for excellence.
To our patients and communities, we say thank you for entrusting us with your health. We are honored to serve you and we are committed to providing the best possible care. Honor to you, our esteemed nurses and healthcare team. You are superstars! In Chichewa we are saying: Ulemu wanu a Namwino athu ndi ena nonse ogwira ntchito za Umoyo. Ndinu a Katswiri!

The End of Plenty Book Review
Recently, we read The End of Plenty by Joel K. Bourne Jr. An honest and sometimes scathing review of the Green Revolution, this book covers how monoculture crops have led to worsening hunger across the world. As the planet warms, the need is ever more urgent for us to find a solution to humanity’s desperate need to feed 9 billion people.
