When a Game of Bingo Became a Lifeline for Education In Rural Malawi
When a Game of Bingo Became a Lifeline for Education In Rural Malawi
In a small village in Malawi, a young girl wakes up before the sun rises.
She folds her blanket, folds her sleeping mat (Mkeka), steps outside into the cool morning air, and begins her day. She sweeps the yard, washes dishes, and draws water. These are not occasional chores; they are part of her daily routine.
Sometimes, she goes to school without eating anything.
When she finally arrives in class, hunger sits quietly beside her. It makes it harder to focus, harder to follow the lesson, harder to dream. There are also not always enough books. Sometimes, students share. Sometimes, they go without.
And yet, she still holds on to her dream. She wants to become a judge.
The Silent Barriers to Education
For many students in rural Malawi, the journey to success goes harder as they grow in their education path. Primary school is free. However, In secondary school, another reality sets in. School fees.
Students are often sent home when fees are not paid. Days turn into weeks, and weeks into lost learning. Catching up becomes almost impossible. Uniforms, books, and basic supplies are also not easy to get. For some, giving up is the closest and easiest way out.
And for those who make it to college, the challenges continue.
A college student walks to the library carrying more than books, carrying uncertainty.
There are days when the question is not what to study, but whether they will be able to stay in school at all. Food, accommodation, and basic needs become constant struggles.
Where Your Support Changes the Story
These are the realities many students in rural Malawi face every single day. But their stories do not end there. Because of your support, those stories begin to change.
The $56,000 raised during the Bingo event is not just a number. It is:
- A student who will stay in school instead of being sent home
- A classroom where learning materials are available
- A university student who can afford a place to stay and a meal to eat
- A young girl who no longer has to choose between survival and education
At Orant Charities Africa, the Education Program supports hundreds of students through school fees, supplies, mentorship, and continuous follow-up. This support does more than keep students in school, it gives them a real chance to succeed.
When one student is supported, a cycle is broken. When one graduate succeeds, a new story begins, one filled with possibility. This is the ripple effect your generosity has created.
A Message of Gratitude
To everyone who participated in the Bingo event, those who organized, attended, donated, and supported, we say thank you.
Your generosity is not just financial support.
It is belief.
It is an opportunity.
It is a statement that these students matter.
From Malawi, the message is simple, but deeply meaningful: “Zikomo kwambiri.” Thank you very much.
